The second installment of the Seattle/Vancouver rivalry takes place in Vancouver. The Canucks won the first meeting 5-4 in October and will look for another victory Thursday night. Vancouver has had a turbulent season thus far, going 5-5 in its last ten games, though the Canucks are coming off back-to-back losses.
While the Kraken have also gone 5-5 in their last ten games, their outlook is improving. Seattle is coming off consecutive victories over the Jets on Sunday and the Blues on Tuesday night.
Who will be victorious in Vancouver? Let’s take a look at the odds and make a prediction:
The Kraken of Seattle
Seattle’s rise is one of the NHL’s best stories, and the Kraken have received incredible support. Andre Burakovsky, acquired in the offseason, has proven to be a brilliant acquisition, leading the team in scoring. Jordan Eberle, on the other hand, isn’t far behind. Matty Beniers is on his way to becoming the Calder Trophy favorite, and Jared McCann leads the team in scoring.
Who would have guessed the Kraken would have a top-10 even strength offense? Their expected goals rate has been fantastic, with a 52.41 xGF%, despite averaging 8.6 high danger chances per game, which is below average. Their power play has also performed admirably, converting on the man advantage 21.4% of the time.
The Kraken’s even strength defense has flourished alongside their top-tier offensive game. While the penalty kill is among the worst in the league (69%), Seattle allows only 2.44 xGA/60, which ranks eighth in the league.
I’m looking forward to seeing who takes the net for Seattle here. While Martin Jones’ numbers are far from elite, he has been the most effective and has led the Kraken to victories, as evidenced by his impressive win over the Blues. Jones has a.889 save percentage and a -0.9 goals saved above expected (GSAx). Philipp Grubauer, on the other hand, has been a disaster since moving to the Pacific Northwest. The former Vezina Trophy winner has a -1.4 GSAx and a.882 SV%.
Canucks of Vancouver
There’s always a story with the Canucks, and this year it’s about captain Bo Horvat. This appears to be his final season in Vancouver, as he and the Canucks work on a trade to a team willing to pay him. Regardless, he’s had a fantastic season, averaging a point per game. J.T. Miller and Quinn Hughes, who are regarded as the Canucks’ future, have also contributed significantly to the team’s success.
To no one’s surprise, the charts don’t appear to favor the Canucks all that much. With a 44.77 xGF%, their even strength game is below average, and they generate about eight and a half high danger chances per game. While their even strength game is lacking, their power play is explosive, scoring 25.9% of the time.
To put it mildly, Vancouver has had a difficult time defensively through 31 games. It has the league’s worst penalty kill at 67% and allows the fifth-worst 2.93 xGA/60.
Thatcher Demko has been placed on injured reserve, so Spencer Martin will be in the net until further notice. Martin has done his best, and he has helped the Canucks win more games than Demko, who is widely regarded as Vancouver’s number one netminder. Despite the victories, Martin’s numbers aren’t great, as he has a -7.4 GSAx and an.885 SV%.
Pick: Kraken vs. Canucks
The Kraken, for whatever reason, have yet to figure out the Canucks. Seattle is 0-5 against Vancouver all-time. However, if — and only if — Jones plays, I’m willing to put my eggs in the Kraken’s basket.
This game is being played in Vancouver, and the Canucks have an oddly poor home record. The Kraken, on the other hand, have a 9-4-1 record on the road.
Of course, all of this is contingent on goaltending. Martin’s performance has been below average, so we know what to expect from him. The difference between Grubauer and Jones in net for Seattle, however, is significant. The Kraken appear to respond much better to Jones than to Grubauer. So, if Jones plays, Seattle has a much better chance of winning. If Grubauer plays, I believe the total is a better bet because both teams are prone to high-scoring games.
Seattle Kraken is my choice. If Jones plays, the 60-minute line will be (+130). If Grubauer plays, the total will be over 6.5 (-110) points.
